Our Executive Committee is very impressive with it almost being a “Who’s Who” for the marine industry

With the exception of the Executive Director, none of the Board Members receives any remuneration for their Board activities and even the expenses incurred in attending meetings are incurred at the member’s own expense.

Jan Claxton

Chairman

Chairman of AMPTO, is a highly respected leader in Queensland’s marine tourism industry. As the owner of Ocean Rafting, Fly Raft, Ocean Safari, Cape Tribulation Lodge and Turtle Rock Café.

Jan brings extensive hands-on experience across operations in Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Cape Tribulation.

Gareth Phillips

Chief Executive Officer

Gareth has been involved with the marine tourism industry for 20 years. He owns a Great Barrier Reef research and education company.

Gareth has also been a skipper in the snorkeling and diving industry in Port Douglas and Cairns. Gareth has a strong passion for the Great Barrier Reef and he believes that the marine tourism industry has a critical role in its conservation. The marine tourism industry has faced many challenges, and that has never been more true now with the impact of the Coronavirus.

Alan Wallish

Deputy Chairman

Alan is a highly respected advocate and long-standing leader within Queensland’s tourism industry. As founder and co-owner of Passions of Paradise, along with Allure Charters and Pure Snorkeling Adventures in Cairns, Allan brings decades of operational experience, having established his flagship reef tour company in 1989.

Allan has played an active role in shaping the industry through his positions as Director of AMPTO and the Reef and Rainforest Research Centre, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to translating scientific knowledge into improved environmental outcomes. His business is also a participant in the Coral Nurture Program, contributing to reef restoration in partnership with the University of Technology Sydney. Passions of Paradise is recognised as a GBRMPA High Standard Operator, an Australian Tourism Award winner, and holds Climate Leader Status with Ecotourism Australia.
