Our Role in Queensland’s Marine Tourism Industry
AMPTO is the peak industry body representing marine tourism operators in Queensland. The organisation campaigns for the industry, supports sustainable tourism practices, and collaborates with government and research partners to protect and promote the Great Barrier Reef.
Cooperative Research Centre for the Reef
We are a founding member of the Cooperative Research Centre for the Reef, supporting research and sustainable industry practices. The association also helped establish the GBR Research Foundation to direct private funding toward reef research.
Crown of Thorns plague
We secured federal and state government funding to help operators combat the Crown of Thorns Starfish outbreak. Marine tourism operators facilitate most public and tourist visits to the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.
Securing ongoing funding
Marine park tourism generates A$2 billion annually for Queensland’s regional economy, with operators’ Environmental Management Charges contributing A$6 million toward reef management and research. Since starting daily snorkelling tours in 1985, AMPTO has expanded its offerings and grown into one of Australia’s largest and best-known scuba dive companies.
